Rangers defender Nikola Katic could find himself struggling for game time even more if Steven Gerrard successfully signs Jake Cooper.
According to The Scottish Sun, the Milwall defender is on Gerrard’s hitlist for next month’s transfer window.
Gerrard is known to be a fan of the 23-year-old and even lodged a £3 million bid in the summer.
The Daily Express claim that chief scout Andy Scoulding was recently sent to watch Cooper in action against Bolton.
Cooper has been in fine form for the Lions this season and has been a mainstay in Neil Harris’ side.
As well as being a defensive rock, Cooper has actually been quite productive at the other end of the pitch, scoring three goals and making six assists.
If Cooper signs, Katic should worry
One man that might be feeling slightly apprehensive about this particular transfer link is Nikola Katic.
At one point Katic looked as though he had nailed down his place in the team alongside Connor Goldson.
But he’s fighting a losing battle with loan star Joe Worrall, and now veteran Gareth McAuley is in the mix after returning to full fitness.
Katic recently turned out for the reserves against Kilmarnock, with some supporters bemused as to what’s going on.
It’s been quite the fall from grace for the Croatian youth international, who must be wondering if his form has been bad enough to warrant not making matchday squads half the time.
If Gerrard successfully signs Cooper this January, then Katic’s development really could suffer; it’d be difficult to see where his opportunities would come.
