15-cap striker makes plea to Klopp but admits Liverpool transfer is 'wishful thinking'

Mainz forward Karim Onisiwo has told Sky Sports Austria that his dream is to play for Liverpool in the Premier League.

It’s fair to say that the striker is hardly the type of player that Liverpool will plump for.

The 29-year-old has a modest record, to say the least. In 145 games for Mainz, he has scored just 19 goals and claimed 21 assists.

Liverpool will need a striker during the January transfer window. Both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will head off to the AFCON but Onisiwo is unlikely to be on the radar.

Still, that hasn’t stopped him from declaring his desire to one play don the famous red jersey in front of an Anfield crowd.

He told Sky Sports Austria: “That’s always wishful thinking or dreams.

“I’m in good shape, of course, but still my rate has to improve so that a Premier League club is still interested in me at my age.

“The Premier League is amazing and I’d take any club. My favourite club, though, is Liverpool.”

Liverpool are on course for a Premier League title tilt. As a result, they’ll need to make sure that whoever they land in January can hit the ground running.

Average: Ship has sailed for Onisiwo at Liverpool

Quite simply, the Austrian striker has as much chance of playing for Liverpool as the England cricket team has of winning the first test match at the Gabba!

It simply won’t happen and his mediocre goalscoring record means he is unlikely to be on the radar at Liverpool.

Prior to heading to Mainz, he played for Mattersburg where he scored 21 goals in 56 appearances. He’s also turned out for Austria Salzburg and TSV Neumarkt.

Onisiwo has 15 caps for his country, scoring one goal for the national team.

Given that Liverpool are unlikely to sign a stellar forward in January, they’ll likely dip into their own ranks.

Divock Origi is currently scoring goals, whilst Takumi Minamino is also likely to get more game time whilst Mane and Salah compete in the AFCON.

Onisiwo will have to continue dreaming about the bright lights of Liverpool.
