Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly in a race to sign Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar this summer as the French midfielder continues to shine for the Champions League side – and Karim Benzema’s past comments will surely excite supporters.

The Sun have claimed that Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are all interested in signing 21-year-old Aouar, while Real Madrid and Juventus are also said to be keen. It is believed Lyon rate their young midfielder at a whopping £65million.

The report claims that Liverpool have already opened talks to sign Aouar, with Adam Lallana expected to leave the club when the season comes to an end. Gini Wijnaldum’s future is also in doubt, with his current deal ending in 2021.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are also interested but it is stated that The Gunners would struggle to win the race for Aouar – given their budget is less than Jurgen Klopp’s war chest. But Real Madrid are also keen, and their striker Benzema is certainly a fan.

“Aouar? He is the new star of Lyon and the next generation of the club. His beautiful season only confirms what I said about him. He is a very good player. I know him, I really like the player. He can go far,” Benzema told Le 10 Sport in 2018.

Interest in Aouar comes as little surprise. The midfielder has had a hand in 16 goals during the 2019-20 campaign, scoring nine and creating seven from the middle of the park. Despite his tender age, Aouar already has 133 appearances under his belt.

Engineering a deal will also be difficult given the reputation of Lyon president Jean-Michael Aulas, but given Benzema’s comments on Aouar – surely both Liverpool and Arsenal will endeavour to bring the French starlet to England this summer.
