'Kane will be...': Paul Merson has made claim about Tottenham Hotspur star
Paul Merson has tipped Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane to win the Premier League Golden Boot this season.
The pundit, writing in the Daily Star, reckons the Spurs striker is the “benchmark” for the likes of Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez.
Kane has won the award three times in his career – in 2016, 2017, and 2021.
Last season, he began the campaign relatively poorly, but still finished with 17 league goals and nine assists.
And in all competitions, the 29-year-old scored an impressive 27 goals.
Last summer, Kane was heavily rumoured to be seeking a move to Manchester City.
But now, the England captain is happy at a resurgent Spurs under the world-class Antonio Conte.
And Tottenham have also bolstered their ranks significantly, so expectations will be high for the club this season.
Mohamed Salah, who signed a new Liverpool contract in July, will likely provide Kane with stiff competition.
And of course, two new world-class forwards have arrived in the Premier League – Haaland at Manchester City and Nunez at Liverpool.
“He is the benchmark”
Nonetheless, Merson still believes Kane will prevail over Salah, Haaland, Nunez and any other contenders.
The Arsenal legend believes the Tottenham star will play every single league game for which he is available.
“Harry Kane is still my favourite for the Golden Boot,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.
“And he is the benchmark for Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez.
“You win the Golden Boot by scoring against the bottom-half teams, not by scoring 15 goals against the top-four sides.
“You get your hat-tricks against the struggling teams in January and Kane will be playing every game.
“I don’t see Haaland doing the same as City want to win the Champions League.
“And with Liverpool that front three can change very quickly. Even Mohamed Salah has been on the bench.”
