Report: Manchester City's 'phenomenal' player to have surgery this week, faces race against time for World Cup spot
Manchester City midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, is to undergo surgery on his injured shoulder this week in a bid to try and be fit for the World Cup.
The England man has had a troubled start to life in Manchester thanks to injuries. He was hoping to really push on this season after City paid around £50m to sign him from Leeds this summer. Instead, he is now facing a race against time to even be fit for the World Cup in Qatar.
The Athletic reports how Phillips is set to go under the knife this week in a bid to fix the issue. There is said to be a belief within the City camp that Phillips can be fit for the winter tournament. However, it’s not ideal for the midfielder, who would have hoped to have been playing regularly before Qatar.
Indeed, Phillips’ place in the squad is actually under threat, despite being brilliant in the Euros as England reached the final.
After being integral for Leeds, Phillips is now very much facing up to being a rotational player at City. And with this injury on top, he could well be set for a miserable end to 2022 in general.
TBR’s View: Phillips Perhaps Regretting City Move
Look, the money on offer and chance to test yourself among the very best was probably too good to turn down for Phillips. But he’ll surely be thinking things could have gone better.
He is simply not dislodging Rodri in the City midfielder and with that he’ll need to be patient. His injury problems will be frustrating as well and there is no doubt he’ll be thinking back to life in Leeds sometimes.
Hopefully, he does get back fit and playing. England need Phillips and Gareth Southgate will be desperate for him to be part of the group in Qatar.
