Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has admitted that he is surprised with how well the Yorkshire side have done this season in their comeback year in the Premier League, and that they can enjoy the final few league games with a top-10 finish on the table.
Speaking to The Evening Yorkshire Post, the England international confessed that his pre-season expectations for what Leeds could achieve this season were nothing close to finishing in the top half of the Premier League table, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side currently sitting ninth in the standings ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Wolves and Southampton.

Leeds received plenty of hype when they secured promotion last season from the Championship to the Premier League, yet the excitement around the Yorkshire club has been warranted, with Bielsa’s side beating the likes of Manchester City, Leicester City and Everton, and Phillips has admitted he is surprised with how well his team have achieved so far.
The 25-year-old midfielder said: “We never thought at the start of the season we would be in the top 10, we just take every game as it comes. We’ve done very well this season. We’ve still got a few games left. We’re safe now, so we can enjoy our football. The pressure is kind of off now because we know whatever happens we’re not going to go down so we can enjoy it and push on for the rest of the games.”

TBR View: Leeds’ achievements this season can be the backbone for Premier League stability
Excitement was rife amongst Premier League fans when Leeds were promoted last season, and the hype and mystique behind this team with a manager dubbed ‘El Loco’ has more than paid off, and now for the Yorkshire side, they need to build upon this impressive debut year in the English top-flight.
Leeds have proven, and then some, to be able to compete with the big guns on the English game, and under Bielsa, they have what it takes to become a staple, yet again, of the top-flight and to begin the journey back to the top of the table as they did in the pre-Premier League years.
