Kalvin Phillips masterclass proves just how much he’s improved this season

Kalvin Phillips was arguably Leeds United’s man of the match last night as they returned to winning ways.

Leeds beat Ipswich Town 2-0 to return to the top of the Championship table.

And Phillips showed maturity and class beyond his years with an assured display in a new position.

Due to a lack of personnel and a recent run of relatively poor form, Marcelo Bielsa decided to change the formation.

He deployed a defence consisting of three defenders and shoehorned natural central midfielder Phillips in as a makeshift solution.

This could have backfired tremendously but the 22-year-old shone in his new position.

Over the last two years, Phillips has improved drastically and he just continues to get better under Bielsa.

Although he is still prone to the odd horror show, the Leeds academy product has ironed out many of the inconsistencies in his game.

He plays wherever Bielsa tells him to, his application is brilliant and he is a well-rounded player.

Phillips can boast defensive prowess and an impressive passing ability, giving Leeds plenty of options when he is on the ball.

At the back, he didn’t let the change of position affect his performance. And he raised his game to inspire Leeds to a clean sheet and three points.

Bielsa will be delighted to have a player of Phillips’ ability, youth and versatility in his ranks.
