Leeds United put in a fantastic performance yesterday to return to the top of the Championship. The Whites defeated Swansea City 2-1 at Elland Road, although that result did not tell the tale of a completely dominant Leeds display.
One player who again put in a fantastic performance was the young midfielder, Kalvin Phillips. The 23-year-old suffocated the supply line for Swansea as Leeds dominated their Welsh opponents.
It was one of many superb performances from the player this season and he is continuing to prove Marcelo Bielsa as an absolute genius.
Before the Argentine’s arrival, Phillips was considered a talented but perhaps limited footballer. His form had dwindled under both Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom. Between him and fellow young midfielder Ronaldo Vieira, the latter was the classier choice.
But Bielsa saw something different. Vieira was sold to Sampdoria in the summer whilst Phillips was worked on tirelessly throughout pre-season.
Now Leeds have an adaptable, intelligent midfield operator who looks ready to lead the club into the Premier League.
Just like the likes of Liam Cooper, Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe, Phillips has found an extra gear under Bielsa. In fact, he is perhaps the player the new Leeds boss has improved more than any other. Hopefully, he will be rewarded with a step up to the top-flight come May.
