In latest reports, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United are being linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.
The Manchester Evening News claims that part of the motivation for dropping an interest in the potential signing of Antoine Griezmann was in order to focus on an attempt to bring Real Madrid star Gareth Bale to Manchester United, as Jose Mourinho looks to revamp his team’s attack with a Galactico line-up on the offensive front.
Reports indicate that Bale could be joined by a centre-forward to help the Red Devils kill off sides in a way that they failed to do far too often in the past season, with Bale the ideal candidate for Mourinho.
What would he bring to Old Trafford?
There can be no doubt that, if available, Manchester United would try to sign Bale.
Jose Mourinho is thought to be looking for a striker, who can play on either wing, in order to offer flexibility and unpredictability against tough opposition, and Bale has shown his ability to play on the right at the Bernabéu despite spending most of his career on the left flank.
Mourinho is also believed to be a huge fan of Bale’s due to his direct dribbling style down the wing and a good end product with his crossing, offering a far more direct manner of play than would be provided by a player like Antoine Griezmann.
With immense quality and a reputation for scoring unbelievable goals from distance, the 27-year-old could easily provide the spark to make the difference on his own – a quality that United have really lacked of late, particularly in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Is there any chance of it happening?
It would seem unlikely. Signed for a huge fee only there years ago, Bale has adapted to life in Spain and shone in his first two seasons in the capital, with his performances more than up to scratch with crucial goals in huge games, like the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals. At times, he was even tipped as the successor to Cristiano Ronaldo as Real Madrid’s superstar talent.
That said, this season has been nothing short of a disaster for the Welshman, with injuries disrupting his season hugely. When he has been fit, he’s struggled for form and still looked hampered by doubts over his fitness. Meanwhile, a change in formation in his absence making it even more difficult for him to re-establish his presence in the side, in a change which could make life difficult for the winger going into next season too.
President Florentino Perez is not one to take fools gladly and certainly won’t tolerate injury and form problems in the long term. However, after spending a huge amount on Bale, he is unlikely to give up on the forward after just one season off the boil.
