Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shocked the football world on Friday when he announced he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

“I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp said in a video shared by the Liverpool media team. “I understand that it’s a shock.”

The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was due to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to “running out of energy”.

Klopp also confirmed that he had told the Liverpool bosses about his intention to stand down back in November last year.

The Guardian reported that Klopp told the Reds players of his decision before training on Friday.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp confirms Reds players are “in a good mood”

At 3pm, the Reds boss held a press conference, where he spoke about his decision and revealed how the players handled the news when he told them.

“The players didn’t have lot of questions,” he said, as transcribed by Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo on X.

“We have a really strong bond, we are professionals and the agreement we have on both sides is for one year.

“For a year it’s a real agreement and the boys see it like that. They are in a good mood.”

Klopp admitted a little earlier in the interview that, when he told some people at the club, “there were some tears, but that’s normal after such a long time”.

Klopp took the Liverpool reins back in 2015 and has gone on to win a multitude of trophies at Anfield, including the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 Premier League title.

The former Borussia Dortmund head coach also won the World’s Best Club Coach title twice, in 2019 and 2020.

Liverpool assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, and elite development coach Vitor Matos will also leave at the end of the season.
