Jurgen Klopp says there is a small chance Liverpool 24-year-old returns for final league game
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that there is a small chance Diogo Jota is available this weekend to return from his injury.
Jota, 24, sustained a foot injury during the recent win over Manchester United, which caused him to watch from the sidelines his team’s dramatic victory on Sunday over West Brom.
The Portuguese attacker was initially ruled out for the rest of the season, but there is a glimmer hope he may play again.
As the Reds hunt down Champions League qualification, they travel to Burnley on Wednesday night for their penultimate league game of the season.
The Merseyside club finish up in front of fans at Anfield this Sunday against Crystal Palace, and Klopp has revealed in his press conference there may be a chance Jota is available for that match.
“Diogo, when the swelling went down we did another picture it looked better than in the first scan. So, it’s a tiny, tiny little chance for him for the weekend [against Palace]. It depends on how he improves. It’s good news for Portugal and Diogo himself,” Klopp said.
Liverpool know two wins from two will see them climb into the top four, which could help salvage what has been an underwhelming season.
If there is any risk around Jota’s fitness, Liverpool would be better off playing it safe.
However, it’s been a strong debut campaign for the Portuguese attacker, who has scored 13 goals in just 29 appearances for them.
It’s brilliant news for Portugal that he’ll be ready for this summer’s European Championships, and they are surely one of the favourites to win this year’s competition.
