Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke highly of Cody Gakpo following the Reds’ Premier League win on Wednesday night.

Anfield played host to Liverpool and Luton Town, and the visitors stunned the home crowd by taking the lead early on in the game.

However, the Reds turned it around in the second half and went on to win convincingly, Gakpo getting on the scoresheet.

Speaking to the Liverpool media team after the game, Klopp was asked about the changes he made at half time to turn the game around.

He replied: “Tactically, no. No, it was not necessary… we just asked the boys to be calmer in these moments so that we can finish off the situations up to our standards, our technical standards.

“That’s what I saw. Then the boys were all of a sudden really awake. I think Cody’s goal, exceptional, quick thinking, bam, a grenade into the box and he puts his head there. Just wonderful, everything.

“Virgil… all the goals were fantastic, obviously. I liked them all. So, a really, really good game. A really special, special game.”

Gakpo hadn’t made much of an impact early on in the game, often dropping a bit too deep and looking isolated.

However, the 24-year-old showed great awareness on 58 minutes to quickly get his head onto Alexis Mac Allister’s powerful delivery and send it goalwards.

The Dutchman’s goal put Liverpool 2-1 up, just two minutes after Virgil van Dijk had headed home from another great Mac Allister delivery.

Luis Diaz then put the Reds out of reach on 71 minutes, getting the better of Teden Meghi and finally finding the back of the net at the ninth attempt.

Harvey Elliott added the cherry on top with an emphatic finish on his 100th appearance for the Anfield outfit, pouncing on a loose ball to slam home.
