Jurgen Klopp has claimed after Liverpool’s excellent 1-0 win over Ajax – as per BBC Sport Live’s coverage – that he held talks with defender Neco Williams over his inconsistent form, ahead of Tuesday night’s clash.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold, Wales international Williams has seen his game time increase of late – but he struggled during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton. He was handed another start on Tuesday, against Ajax.
The 19-year-old, though, was in inspired form and created the winner. Picking the ball up on the right flank, his deep cross deceived Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana – allowing Jones to volley home with his right foot, from a tight angle.
A night for Liverpool’s young guns, Williams, Jones and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher all starred for Klopp’s side. Speaking after the match, Klopp stated he held talks with Williams before the match over his form.
“We had a long talk with Neco Williams this week, we think he has more in the locker than he has shown so far. The season started later a difficult summer with lockdown, a short pre-seaosn and then Trent Alexander-Arnold is out.
“Neco was not in the best shape but he’s on the big stage – tonight he showed glimpses. He can be so much better still,” Klopp continued, following the 1-0 win – which has booked Liverpool’s place in the knockout rounds.
TBR’s view – Is Williams good enough for Liverpool?
Ask die-hard Liverpool fans, the ones that keep up to date with the Under-23 side, and they will tell you that Williams has every chance of breaking into the Reds side as a regular in years to come.
Many predict Alexander-Arnold will move into midfield eventually, given his sublime technique. A new right-back will be needed and Williams is certainly the best-placed candidate to be given that role. Tuesday was a good start.
