Jurgen Klopp reveals which Everton villain motivated Liverpool to late victory

Following a memorable late win over Everton, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hinted that a tackle from 2016 was on the mind of matchwinner Divock Origi as he headed in from just yards out.

The tackle from Ramiro Funes Mori sidelined the Belgian striker as he was in the best form of his career and he has struggled to ever return to the same heights.

“I said to him [Origi] on the side of the pitch. I had it in my mind and have never forgotten since then. Fouls happen and even harsh tackles happen but in his case it was so obvious that it was a break in his development because at that time he was outstanding,” Klopp recalled.

“Coming on tonight he can finish that chapter and from now on everything will be fine again.”

Origi has been on the very fringes of the Liverpool squad ever since, being loaned out to Germany in 2017/18 and then having only made the bench for Liverpool in the Premier League twice this year.

With vindication secured in the thrilling win on Sunday, Origi can now look to put the result behind him and build on that success to get his career back on track.

Funes Mori’s challenge, which earned him a straight red card at the time, has sent Origi’s career into decline, but now he can begin to work his way back up again.
