Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool’s official website that everyone at the club is delighted at how Danny Ings is performing at Southampton.

Klopp sanctioned the departure of Ings in 2018 and a year later he made his loan switch to the Saints permanent for £20 million (BBC).

He struggled massively with injuries and Klopp has admitted he’s delighted at how he has progressed since leaving Liverpool.

He told the club’s official website: “Everybody in the building is so happy about the situation of Danny.

“Even if he is not anymore, he is still ‘our boy’, kind of, and we all follow each step of his career.

“We are celebrating goals he scores – that will be different tomorrow obviously, but apart from the games against us we couldn’t wish him any better than we do. He is a wonderful person.”

The 27-year-old has been in blistering form this season.

Ings has netted 16 goals in all competitions during 2019/20 and netted against Liverpool back in September.

He struggled terribly with fitness at Liverpool, managing just four goals in 25 appearances.

It seems clear he was a likeable figure at Anfield, however.

Klopp’s comments seem to suggest that he wouldn’t have minded keeping him around, although Ings’ desire to play regular football was probably strong.

Liverpool fans will hope they don’t get a taste of what the £75,000-a-week (Spotrac) Ings can do this weekend when the two teams meet.

The Reds could go 22 points clear at the top of the top-flight should they defeat the Saints this weekend.
