Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp singled out Mohamed Salah for praise after his performance midweek in the Champions League group stages.

The Reds had already sealed top spot in their European group before Wednesday night’s away fixture against FC Midtjylland, but the two two played out an all-action 1-1 draw with plenty of VAR stoppages.

Visitors Liverpool were in front within the opening minute through Salah’s goal, albeit there was perhaps a touch of fortune about the finish when his right foot inadvertently tapped the ball past the goalkeeper when racing through on goal at speed.

The Merseyside club will find out Monday who they face in the last-16 of Europe’s elite club competition and will hope to emulate their success of winning the trophy like they did in the 2018/19 season.

Salah played the full 90 minutes away to Danish side  Midtjylland and his goal saw him overtake club legend Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s all-time record goalscorer in the Champions League (22).

The 28-year-old right-winger continues to be a real talisman at Anfield, scoring 12 goals in 18 games across all competitions so far this season.

Klopp stressed the importance of the Egypt international to the team in his post-match analysis.

“Exceptional player, absolutely exceptional player. Since we worked together obviously a lot of things clicked really for all of us. He helps the team massively and he knows and appreciates the help of the team as well,” Klopp said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“Mo is a very exceptional player – I think nobody doubted it, but if you need numbers to prove it then he delivers that as well.

With so many superstars in this current Liverpool team, Salah is perhaps the one above the rest that may have secured a club legacy already and he continues to smash individual records with the consistency of high level performances.

The left-footed attacker has become a goal machine in the last few years that is so driven in front of goal and it looks like he’s at the peak of his powers right now.

His record to overtake Gerrard for Champions League goals is another significant milestone, proving he’s one of the club’s elite players in the past few decades.
