It’s just over two years since Jurgen Klopp sanctioned the sale of Philippe Coutinho and it’s looking like the Liverpool boss made another fine decision.
Eyebrows were raised on both sides when Liverpool agreed to sell Coutinho. The Brazilian was coming off the best season he had ever had for the Reds. Furthermore, it was a January sale, adding extra fuel to those baffled by the Reds’ decision.

On the other side, there were those who thought Barcelona spending over £150m on a player was all a bit too much.
And as the years have ticked by and Coutinho has struggled, you’d have to say that Klopp was proven right in allowing the attacking midfielder to move away.
Indeed, current rumours are suggesting Coutinho is free to now leave Barcelona. Having spent the last year or so with Bayern Munich and delivering indifferent performances, it’s little surprise.

Coutinho’s performance levels have dipped considerably. He’s no longer the free-scoring attacking player we saw at Anfield. Instead, he appears to be a shadow of his former self.
The Brazilian fired in over 50 goals and added more than 40 assists during his Premier League years. In comparison, he laid on just eleven goals in over 70 La Liga appearances at Barcelona.
Klopp knows what he is doing and it shows
Obviously you can’t just look at one decision and decide a manager is a genius. But with Klopp, it is the collective of decisions that makes you appreciate his quality.
Furthermore, he also used the money very wisely indeed. Klopp spent a big chunk of the cash on Virgil van Dijk. It goes without saying that his impact has been felt at the club.

In addition, Klopp also added Alisson Becker in between the sticks. Essentially, Klopp used the fee from Coutinho to strengthen his defensive ranks and didn’t lose anything in terms of attacking flair.
Liverpool scored 89 the season after Coutinho had left. In his last full season at Anfield, the Reds managed 78 goals. They also conceded 36, compared to just 22 last season.
It seems, then, that Jurgen Klopp definitely had the last laugh when it comes to Philippe Coutinho.
