Despite ongoing speculation surrounding his future, Simon Mignolet might stay at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp believes Mignolet will still be a Liverpool player next season, Sky Sports News reports.
Mignolet’s playing time was limited to just two appearances last season – both in the cup – after Alisson Becker’s summer arrival. Alisson played every single Premier League game and every Champions League match as Mignolet sat on the bench.
The Belgian stopper has made over 200 appearances for Liverpool but it looked like he was heading for an exit. With first-team chances unlikely next season unless Alisson gets injured, Mignolet has to make a career-defining choice.
However, Liverpool manager Klopp wants Mignolet to stay so that he can keep Alisson on his toes. The 31-year-old is one of the best back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League – something which Klopp believes is very important on the road to success.
Klopp on Mignolet’s future
As reported by Sky Sports News, Klopp said: “Yes, [it’s] how I’ve heard,” said the German. “I’ve had a lot of conversations in the last couple of years, months – not weeks. Before we left [for the summer break] we had a talk. I would say yes [he stays].
“At a club like Liverpool you need two number ones in the club and we have that with Ali and Simon. It’s a good situation for the club and a situation you should have and that’s why everything is fine from my point of view.”
Liverpool’s goalkeeper conundrum
In Alisson, Liverpool have their undisputed number one goalkeeper for years to come. The Brazilian star is an immediate fan favourite at Anfield and he will continue to take his place between the sticks for Klopp’s side.
Keeping Mignolet is the ideal scenario for Liverpool if he wants to stay. If he is content to provide cover and competition for Alisson, Liverpool have a solid and experienced back-up option on their books.
But if he wants to leave, Klopp probably needs to buy a new goalkeeper. Caoimhin Kelleher, 20, is a promising young goalkeeper but he is inexperienced and currently injured. If Mignolet wants to leave, it might cost a bit of money to find a goalkeeper of that quality to sit on the bench.
