Barcelona are ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Real Betis defender Junior Firpo this summer, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
The 22-year-old has a release clause of £45 million and is wanted on the back of a standout campaign in 2018/19.
During the campaign he made 38 top-flight appearances, scoring five goals and registering six assists.
Liverpool are in the market for another left-back. Alberto Moreno has departed, leaving Andy Robertson as the club’s only senior option.
Barcelona have now emerged as frontrunners, however. They too need another left-sided option to provide cover for Jordi Alba.
The lure of the Catalan giants could prove decisive in Firpo’s decision making over his next move.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are the reigning Champions of Europe, however, and that should be enough to entice players to Anfield.
Liverpool should let Barcelona win the day in this one.
The money being touted for Firpo’s services is laughable and certainly in excess of what Liverpool should be paying for an understudy.
Andy Robertson is one of the best left-backs in Europe and won’t be replaced by Klopp any time soon.
This could be a perfect chance for the Liverpool boss to blood a youngster.
The academy in place at the club boasts some sensational talent and rather than spending big on Firpo, Klopp would be shrewd to promote a future prospect.
