Junior Firpo facing defining spell at Leeds as he nears return from injury

Leeds United may be one side who benefit from having at least one weekend off heading into the international break.

Jesse Marsch’s side had not won any of their last three Premier League games. And it is safe to say that the events of deadline day left a pretty sour taste in the mouth of supporters.

Admittedly, Nottingham Forest suffered an awful defeat last time out. And many may have been confident that Leeds would have come out on top at Elland Road on Monday.

But Leeds can now hit something of a refresh button, whether that be before or after the international break. And with that, Marsch is more likely to be able to welcome several players back from injury.

One of those closing in on a return is Junior Firpo. And it is hard to know how Leeds fans should feel about the 26-year-old coming back into the fold.

Firpo had a very tough first season with the Whites. He made a number of mistakes and he never seemed settled in the Premier League.

However, there were more promising signs towards the end of the campaign. And Leeds did not sign another left-back in the summer.

Firpo facing defining spell at Leeds

It has been Pascal Struijk who has played there so far, after Firpo suffered an injury in the opening pre-season friendly.

Struijk has done well. But Firpo was outstanding while he was on the pitch against Blackpool. And with that, it does appear that Firpo is potentially heading into a defining period in his Leeds career.

If the performances mirror what was seen in that opening pre-season friendly, Leeds may be about to find out why Victor Orta brought him in in 2020.

But if he cannot impress, Leeds simply cannot ignore the issue any longer. Signing a new left-back simply has to be a priority in January.
