Julian Draxler is surely a player Aston Villa should have eyes on. The German could be a wonderful alternative to Ross Barkley for next season.
Julian Draxler should be on the radar at Aston Villa. The 27-year-old is coming to the end of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain and could well leave on a free.
He recently told Bild how he wants a prominent role at a club, saying that he won’t chase money for his next contract. That could suit Villa, then, who may be able to give him a good role, judging by this season.
Draxler is an attacking midfielder, of course. He can play centrally or out wide but likes to get the ball and make things happen with it. Villa currently have two players like that in their starting XI.
Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley have found a very productive way of playing together. It’s certainly benefitting Villa as they’ve started the season very well.
But Barkley is only on loan. Eurosport claims Chelsea like what they see, too, and the door is open to bringing him back for next season. That could hurt Villa, though, as they’ll surely want to hang onto him themselves.
So Dean Smith and co. might have to consider other options, given Barkley’s future isn’t in their hands. Draxler, a World Cup winner who’s available for free in June, would be a fantastic alternative.
He’d be an ambitious one, though. Villa would need a fantastic season to prove to Draxler that he can achieve things at Villa Park. Ironically, that fantastic season might come down to how well Barkley plays.
And the better he plays, the more chance Villa need to consider signing someone like Draxler.
