Juan Foyth exit would end Mauricio Pochettino pet project

It seems Juan Foyth could be approaching the end of his time as a Tottenham Hotspur player.

Speaking to TNT this week, Foyth stated ‘the best thing’ to do might be to leave Tottenham when the transfer window reopens.

If the £8 million (BBC) signing from Estudiantes was to leave Tottenham once the current season is concluded, it would mean the end of a Mauricio Pochettino project.

Pochettino was a huge fan of Foyth. He reportedly pushed for the signing of his countryman, with Tottenham beating off interest from PSG to sign the youngster.

In the summer, Football.London reported that Pochettino had high hopes for Foyth this season. They suggested the former Tottenham manager saw the 22-year-old as ‘one of the best young central defenders in Europe’.

The faith was so strong that Pochettino was also willing to rely on Foyth as a right-back option following the sale of Kieran Trippier. Anything to shoehorn a player Pochettino clearly felt had the potential to be a star into this Tottenham team.

Unfortunately, things have not panned out for Foyth. He picked up an ankle injury in the summer which ruled him out until November at which point Pochettino was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese is clearly not a fan of Foyth. Japhet Tanganga has been promoted ahead of him in the pecking order and the Argentine international has not played for Spurs since December.

It seems that, with Pochettino’s exit, the final nail was put in the coffin regarding Foyth’s chances of a successful Tottenham career.
