Journalist would be very surprised if ‘world class’ Tottenham target joined Man Utd now

Strikers appear to be in-demand in the Premier League this summer.

Indeed, the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea are all looking for new centre-forwards, while Manchester United have already added Joshua Zirkzee to their ranks.

Interestingly, after the signing of Zirkzee, United were linked with a move for Ivan Toney, but according to Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, a move to Old Trafford may not be on the cards for Toney.

Jones says that a number of Premier League teams may be in for Toney, with Tottenham strongly linked, but he would be stunned if a move to Manchester came about.

Ivan Toney to Manchester United is unlikely

Jones shared what he knows about the ‘world class’ England international.

“I don’t see for the life of me why Manchester United would sign Ivan Toney when they have Rasmus Hojlund and have just signed Zirkzee. That’s there two strikers,” Jones said.

“I don’t see why this would be the case. United have definitely had interest in Ivan Toney, but at £60m that isn’t going to happen. If he’s available for £40m there’s a cluster of Premier League clubs who would go for him. I would be surprised if it’s United he ends up at because unless they’re playing 4-4-2 I can’t see how they fit in all these forwards.”

Toney to United makes no sense

Jones is right, this rumour just doesn’t add up.

United already have two strikers who could feasibly start next season, and to add a third of Toney’s quality would be overkill.

Toney will surely want to join a club where he’s going to play regularly next season, and, unfortunately, he won’t be guaranteed that luxury if he signs for Manchester United this summer.

A move to a team like Tottenham feels much more likely for Toney.
