Journalist shares whether Tottenham could swoop for Yassine Bounou
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a swoop for Morocco international Yassine Bounou.
Journalist Rudy Galetti has told GiveMeSport that “it cannot be excluded” for Spurs to pursue the Sevilla star.
Tottenham are reportedly looking around for potential successors to Hugo Lloris.
The France legend has a contract with Spurs until the summer of 2024.
It remains to be seen whether he’ll pen an extension or leave Tottenham when his current deal expires.
Lloris, a bastion of consistency for most of his time at Spurs, has made a number of errors this season.
Galetti claims Tottenham have opened talks with the 36-year-old over a new deal.
However, the reporter also believes Spurs are “exploring different options” throughout the squad this year.
Galetti has suggested that Tottenham will review their goalkeeping options in the summer.
And Bounou could well be a candidate for Spurs, alongside Everton and England ace Jordan Pickford.
“Tottenham are exploring different options in all the roles for January and especially for the summer, starting with the goalkeeper,” Galetti explained to GiveMeSport.
“We know that they opened talks with Lloris for his contract. But it cannot be excluded that Spurs can try for Jordan Pickford or Yassine Bounou.”
Tottenham target Bounou – factfile
Bounou, 31, has over 250 competitive club appearances under his belt, as well as 52 caps for Morocco.
The Sevilla ace helped the Atlas Lions reach the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar last year.
Bounou, also known as Bono, kept four clean sheets across the tournament.
He also saved two penalties in the round of 16 shoot-out win over Spain.
Bounou has also been a star for Sevilla.
Last season, he earned La Liga’s Zamora award for fewest goals conceded per game – just 24 in 31 appearances.
Bounou’s efforts have put him in the five-man shortlist for The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award.
The 6ft 5in ace also helped his club win the Europa League title in 2020.
According to Estadio Deportivo – via the Daily Mail – Sevilla have placed a £26million price tag on their keeper.
Is Bounou what Spurs need?
While Bounou is an outstanding keeper, he may not be what Tottenham need at this moment in time.
Lloris could well leave Spurs next year, which means they need to find a long-term successor.
Bounou turns 32 this year. Although goalkeepers can – and do – play into their late thirties and beyond, Spurs could really do with an option for the next 10-15 years.
Tottenham could do with bringing in someone in his early to mid-twenties, much like they did with Lloris himself 11 years ago.
Although there have been goalkeepers who have moved for upwards of £50million, they have been outliers for the most part.
For £26million, Spurs could probably get themselves a talented, fairly young goalkeeper who can develop into a world-class keeper for the next decade and beyond.
