The future of Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur is once again been thrown up in the air after another Premier League loss.
Despite being 2-0 up at Manchester City, Tottenham capitulated in the second half as they let City over run them in midfield and attack. In the end, it was just another disappointing night and Conte once again sounded a beaten man.
Of course, Conte’s future seems to be under constant review. One week he’s staying, the next he might walk. The problem now is that other managers are being linked, with Thomas Tuchel credited this week with being one of the names Spurs could turn to.
However, despite talk of Conte being off soon, German journalist Christian Falk has said for CaughtOffside that he’s heard Conte is sticking around for some time yet.
“He’s (Tuchel) very calm at the moment and is just seeing how things develop around him. I think Tottenham would be an interesting club for Thomas Tuchel but I’ve heard that Antonio Conte wants to stay another year,” Falk wrote.
The idea of Spurs replacing Conte with Tuchel would seem odd to some fans. They spent big to get Conte and he’s on huge wages. And after Tuchel was given the boot from Chelsea, he’d have something to prove.
TBR’s View: Conte and Tottenham need to sort things out
We are approaching a point where things could start to get messy here. Conte obviously wants backing with more players but Spurs obviously feel there’s more caution to be had.
On the other side of things, Spurs and Daniel Levy will argue that Conte isn’t getting the best from his team now either.
If he is to stay for another year though, this is good news. It means Spurs at least have a plan and can build a bit. If they are going to part ways, then it’s probably best to do it now, rather than later.
