Arsenal have reportedly bid for Borja Mayoral.

A story broke on Thursday morning stating that the Gunners had made a £22m bid for the Spanish striker, much to the shock of many fans.

However, there may not be as much to this story as meets the eye.

Indeed, speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing the idea that Arsenal have indeed bid for Mayoral, and he says that he has strong connections on both ends of this story and that this bid isn’t actually material.

Arsenal haven’t bid for Mayoral

Jones shared what he knows about the 26-year-old.

“He wasn’t just linked with Arsenal, but the story was that they made a £22m bid for Borja Mayoral. The story went on to say that Getafe would regret the bid because they wanted closer to £39m for him. I woke up to this story and I was like how have I missed this because I have decent connections at both ends of this at the Arsenal end and the player’s end,” Jones said.

“It doesn’t make any sense because I spoke to someone close to this recently and they said that if Fulham wanted to sign him it would be around £12m, so what has gone on here? Anyone, the reason this is at number five is because it’s not happening., Arsenal haven’t made an offer of £22m, Arsenal don’t have £22m to spend on a striker this month.

“They have an intention to make something happen in this window, but there isn’t £20m worth of wiggle room. Arsenal are also being linked with Joshua Zirkzee at around £50m, but that won’t happen either.”

Doesn’t make sense

As Jones says, this rumour never made the most sense.

By all accounts, Arsenal want an elite centre-forward to replace Gabriel Jesus, not a stopgap, and for that reason, Mayoral probably isn’t top of their list.

Also, the idea that he’s being valued at £39m seems a bit ludicrous too, especially as Jones has heard a valuation at £27m lower in the past.

The transfer window is called silly season for a reason, and, as ever, it sounds as though Arsenal are at the centre of a lot of baseless speculation.
