Antonio Conte was heavily linked with the Manchester United job, but the Italian decided to accept Tottenham Hotspur’s offer instead this week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job was hanging by a thread after Liverpool smashed five past David de Gea at Old Trafford. Conte was, in many people’s eyes, the favourite to replace him.
However, Manchester United decided to stick with Solskjaer and Tottenham pounced. They wasted no time in making their move and Conte, to many people’s surprise, decided to accept the Spurs job instead of waiting for the Old Trafford hot seat.
So, why did Conte say yes to Spurs? Italian journalist Roberto Gotta has shed some light on his decision.
Journalist explains why Conte chose Tottenham over waiting for Manchester United job
Gotta was asked about Conte’s decision and he has revealed that the ex-Chelsea boss did wait until the end for the United job. However, what made him say yes to Spurs instead of waiting for the Red Devils was the fact that demands in North London are a lot less than in Manchester.
He told TMW: “I understand that he waited until the last moment (for United). United have a better squad and have more decisive players. However, Manchester United has never publicly had little faith in Solskjaer. Perhaps also to reassure him.
“Conte, in Manchester, he certainly should have won immediately, while at Tottenham, he would have more time preparing the team for next season. For me, he did well, or he risked not doing half of it.”

TBR View:
Gotta has got a point.
Every loss at Manchester United is viewed as a crisis, but he might get away with a few bad results at Spurs. The pressure to deliver is a lot less at Tottenham than it is at Old Trafford, which makes this a less stressful job.
However, when a manager of Conte’s calibre comes in, the expectations increase. That has already happened at Tottenham as many fans are convinced that the Italian will end their trophy drought.
It will be interesting to see if Conte can be a success at Tottenham after his good pal Jose Mourinho failed. If even the Italian can’t change Spurs’ fortunes, it’s hard to imagine who else can.
