Journalist says Tottenham are interested in Raheem Sterling
Graeme Bailey has told 90min’s Talking Transfers Podcast that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Raheem Sterling, with Harry Kane doing some work behind the scenes to persuade the Manchester City star to join him in North London.
Sterling may well be on the move from the Etihad Stadium this summer. His contract with the Premier League champions expires at the end of next season.
It had appeared that Chelsea are in the driving seat to land Sterling. The Athletic reported last week that the Blues are growing confident of signing the £44 million forward.
Why Footballers Keep Running Down Their Contracts
The report claimed that Sterling had been asking about life at Chelsea and working with Thomas Tuchel. But it seems that they have not got a clear run to his signature.
Reports have previously claimed that Antonio Conte is keen on Sterling. And Bailey has now suggested that Spurs remain in the running, and have Kane working on boosting their hopes of a deal.
“Tottenham are in this as well. I’m told Harry Kane might be doing some background work here, might be trying to persuade his England teammate,” he told Talking Transfers.
“They play very well together these two. So if he’s considering Chelsea, why wouldn’t he consider Tottenham. I’d take Tottenham seriously and they can offer Champions League football.”
Tottenham are interested in Sterling
It would be a huge statement if Tottenham signed Sterling. There is a real possibility that Sterling could end his career as one of the greatest goalscorers the Premier League has ever seen.
He is already into three figures. And he does not turn 28 until December. So he could potentially be around for several years to come.
Certainly, his contract situation opens the door for a potential bargain. He has been described as ‘frightening‘. And, as Bailey notes, he has enjoyed playing with Kane for his country.
Chelsea may be on pole position, but Tottenham may well not allow Sterling to move to Stamford Bridge without a fight.
