Journalist says Newcastle have 'no chance' of signing AC Milan star Rafael Leao
Newcastle United have been linked with a move for AC Milan striker Rafael Leao on plenty of occasions over the last few months, but the Magpies apparently have no chance of signing him.
The Portugal international is a fantastic talent. He joined Milan as a 20-year-old back in 2019 for £32 million (Goal), and although his first two seasons at the San Siro wasn’t incredible, he showed flashes of brilliance.
Then arrived the 2021/22 campaign and Leao burst into life. The now-23-year-old scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions in what was a truly incredible season for AC Milan.
His performances attracted a ton of interest, and Newcastle have been rumoured to be keen on signing the versatile Portugal forward, but Dean Jones has just claimed that the Magpies can only dream of this happening this summer.
Journalist says Newcastle have no chance of signing Rafael Leao
Just last month, reports from Italy revealed that Newcastle are so keen to sign Leao from Milan that they are ready to quadruple his wages. Sadly, it looks like that will not be enough.
Jones told GiveMeSport: “Rafael Leao became a superstar at AC Milan last season, and I’m being told there’s no chance he steps down to a club outside the Champions League any time soon.
“Milan won’t want to lose this guy; he is awesome.
“It’s a nice one for Newcastle to dream about, but that’s all it is for now.”
Newcastle United have Callum Wilson and Chris Wood up top at the moment. Joelinton can play there as well, but after how well he has done in the middle of the park, it makes no sense to push him up again.
Anything other than a top half finish for Newcastle next year will be considered a failure. They should really be aiming for that seventh spot, and their performances in the second half of last season showed that they are more than capable, especially when St James’ Park is rocking.
To achieve that, the Magpies really need a top-quality striker to guarantee them goals week in, week out. Leao, who can play anywhere across the front-three and also as a second striker, would’ve been a sensational signing for Howe’s side.
Sadly, if Jones is to be believed, that will not be happening this summer.
