Journalist says Leeds think they may have chance of signing Gvardiol

Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Leeds United believe that they have a chance of signing Josko Gvardiol this summer with the Whites planning to show ambition in the market.

Leeds find themselves back in the mix to try and stay up in the Premier League this season. Burnley’s two wins have left Jesse Marsch’s side just four points above the bottom three.

A win over Crystal Palace on Monday will put Leeds in a brilliant position once again. But clearly, there is more work to be done before the Whites get across the line.

And it seems that it has, somehow, become even more imperative that Leeds stay up. The Whites may be planning some incredible pieces of business in the summer.

Of course, it is well-known that Leeds wanted Gvardiol before his move to RB Leipzig. And it says a lot about the potential he has that the links have not been forgotten almost two years on.

The Croatia international has established himself as one of the best prospects in Europe. He has been described as an ‘elite’ defender who could be worth up to £80 million.

Most Leeds fans would look at that and suggest that any hope of signing Gvardiol has long gone. But Jones has claimed that such a move may not be as far-fetched as it seems.

“I thought at first it was a bit too ambitious, but the more I speak to people, the more I start to realise that Leeds are starting to believe that this is where they should be shopping,” he told Give Me Sport.

“These are the sorts of players that they believe they can get. So, I’m certainly not going to rule it out.”

Leeds signing Gvardiol would be the most remarkable deal – but fans will hold out little hope

Leeds have spent money since being promoted. And it is clear that the squad needs reinforcements this summer if they do stay up.

But in their wildest dreams, most Leeds fans could not imagine Gvardiol ending up at Elland Road. Even if his asking price is not quite £80 million, a deal would absolutely smash Leeds’ transfer record by some distance.

It would be the most incredible statement of intent. But it is fascinating that Jones does not believe that a deal is out of the question.
