Journalist says Leeds squad are really enjoying working with Marsch

Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that the Leeds United squad are enjoying life under Jesse Marsch more and feel refreshed under the new head coach.

Marcelo Bielsa’s departure earlier this season was met with a period of mourning around Elland Road. It says a lot about how loved Bielsa was that many were not at all happy with his sacking despite a really tough run of form.

Marsch did not get off to the best start. An encouraging 1-0 loss at Leicester was followed by a terrible 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa. And the atmosphere inside Elland Road on that evening seemed considerably more toxic than anything during Bielsa’s tenure.

However, Leeds have responded superbly in the last two games. They have beaten Norwich and Wolves to move themselves seven points clear of the bottom three.

The win against the Canaries was expected. However, the manner of the two results have said a lot about the mentality of the squad.

On both occasions, Leeds have scored their winners in stoppage-time. And against Wolves, they needed to come from 2-0 down at half-time.

It really does appear that Marsch has won the squad over since his arrival. In fact, Jones suggested that the Leeds players may have been ready for the change based on the way they have responded to working with Marsch.

“The impact that Jesse Marsch has had on this squad has been really positive. The players are really enjoying it,” he told Give Me Sport.

“It’s not a million miles off what they were doing under Bielsa, but they are enjoying it more and the change has been refreshing.”

Leeds do look to be benefitting from change under Marsch

Bielsa is an iconic figure at Leeds. There is a reason that many place him alongside Howard Wilkinson as a contender for the second-best boss in their history.

But unfortunately, it did appear that the squad needed a different voice. It must be noted that Bielsa could well have turned the side’s fortunes around had he stayed.

But a lot of the gloom at Leeds has lifted since Marsch came in. Obviously, there is a lot more work to be done. And some fans will be wary of getting carried away given how the wins over Norwich and Wolves played out.

But there is no doubt that Marsch has done a brilliant job of endearing himself to fans and players alike since taking on an incredibly difficult challenge in succeeding Bielsa.
