Journalist says he was told Spurs would sign 'unbelievable' player by now

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has told The Last Word on Spurs podcast that he is surprised that Adama Traore is not a Tottenham Hotspur player by now, claiming that he had been told that the deal would be done by this stage.

Spurs continue to be heavily linked with the Wolves star. In fact, it has been suggested that Adama Traore is the player most likely to sign for Tottenham in the January transfer window.

Interestingly, it would appear that there are now some doubts over the Spain international’s future.

Alasdair Gold has reported that it has been suggested to him that Tottenham are more hopeful of signing Luis Diaz than Traore.

‘A surprise to me’

It would be a surprise if Traore did not end up joining Tottenham this month. He looked to be the player that Antonio Conte wants to use on the right of his defence.

Neither Emerson Royal or Matt Doherty have looked overly impressive. And that led many to wonder if Traore could emulate Victor Moses by being converted into a wing-back and making that position his own in a Conte side.

However, the Spurs boss may actually have other ideas. Bridge suggested that he had been told to expect the deal to be done by now. He also provided an insight into how Conte had planned to use Traore if he joins.

“I’m going to be completely honest. I was told Friday lunch time that Traore would be sorted by now. ,” he told The Last Word on Spurs podcast.

“The fact that it’s not is a surprise to me and many others who have contacts at clubs.

“One thing I had been told is that there has been a lot of talk about Traore being made into a right-wing back. That, for me, is not forever. It’s just until the end of the season.”

“I’ve been told that’s not permanent [Traore playing right-wing back].”

Tottenham not planning to use Adama Traore as long-term wing-back throws further doubt over move

Of course, much can still happen with several days left in the window. But it is surprising how quiet the speculation seems to have gone.

That would indeed suggest that Tottenham are prioritising other names ahead of Traore.

And Bridge’s claim about his position only throws further doubt over a potential deal. Traore looked to be a target Spurs fans could get on board with because Conte has a track record for finding these gems for the wing-back roles. He has previously been described as ‘unbelievable‘ by Jack Grealish.

Traore’s record for the last two seasons is poor. As a winger, there look to be much better options on the market.

So Tottenham are right to look elsewhere if Conte is unsure Traore is the long-term answer to their wing-back problems.
