Journalist says Celtic boss Postecoglou has admirers at Manchester City
Rory Smith has told The Monday Night Club that while he would be stunned to see Ange Postecoglou in charge at Manchester City, there are a lot of people at the club who really rate the Celtic boss extremely highly.
Postecoglou’s stock continues to rise. Celtic now appear to have one hand on the Scottish Premiership title after their Old Firm win at the weekend. They are now six points clear with six games remaining.
Admittedly, it is a small sample size, but Postecoglou boasts one of the highest win percentages in Celtic history. And he has done it with a brilliant brand of football.
In fact, it is remarkable to think about the impact the Australian has had at Parkhead. Celtic finished 25 points adrift of their rivals last season.
Postecoglou left Yokohama F. Marinos to take the Celtic job. The Japanese side is one of the clubs partially owned by the City Football Group. So it should come as little surprise that he is on the radar of those working behind the scenes at the Etihad Stadium.
And Smith does indeed believe that Postecoglou has a lot of admirers at Manchester City.
“I’m not even sure it would be teams lower down in the Premier League,” he told the Monday Night Club.
“Ange Postecoglou is not going to get the Man City job, but there are a lot of people at City who really rate him. That tells you all you need to know about how well regarded he is in coaching circles.
“He works for Yokohama Marinos, which is the team in the City group in the J League, and they think he is really good.
“I’d be staggered if Pep left in the summer and they gave it to him, but there are people who will tell you he is really good.”
Celtic will certainly hope Manchester City do not come calling for Postecoglou
It does tend to irk a lot of people when fans write off Scottish football. But you would imagine that Celtic fans would not mind that snobbery if Manchester City do have to replace Pep Guardiola in the future.
On current evidence, the Hoops will want to keep Postecoglou for as long as possible. This season could be the platform for something really special for the club. A big opportunity in the Champions League awaits the league winners.
Right now, that looks to be Celtic. And that could lead to another spell of dominance for the Bhoys.
It will certainly help if Postecoglou sticks around for a long time.
