Guillem Balague claims Newcastle in talks over ‘one of the world’s best’

Newcastle United have reportedly begun talks to try and sign Kieran Trippier, according to Guillem Balague.

The Magpies’ recent takeover has effectively made them the richest club in world football.

However, Newcastle remain firmly in a relegation battle, sitting second-from-bottom in the Premier League table.

As a result, the Magpies could really do with high-quality players who know the English top flight well and can hit the ground running.

Trippier very much fits the bill, and Balague has told BBC Sport that Newcastle have set their sights on the 31-year-old.

“I hear from Atletico Madrid that Newcastle are really interested in getting Trippier and they have started negotiations with his people,” he said.

“I am not sure if they will get him or not.”

Trippier came through the ranks at Manchester City and had loan spells at Barnsley and Burnley before joining the latter permanently in 2012.

After three years in Lancashire, the England international joined Spurs, spending four years playing for the north Londoners.

In 2019, Trippier joined Atletico Madrid for a reported £20million, and won La Liga last season.

He was linked with Manchester United in the summer, and Marca labelled him “one of the world’s best” right-backs in a feature article on the subject.
