Journalist Fabrizio Romano comments on Arsenal's reported interest in Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has told his Here We Go podcast that Arsenal are indeed interested in signing Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana. Earlier reports suggested the Gunners wanted the Ajax stopper. Now, Romano has confirmed as much – but says it depends on his suspension.
Onana, 25, is considered one of the best goalkeepers yet to join Europe’s top-five leagues in England, Spain, Italy, France or Germany. Instead, he has remained at Ajax since joining the club from Barcelona as an academy player. Onana has since surpassed 200 Ajax outings.
But the 18-time Cameroon international has failed to feature for Ajax since a doping ban in January. Onana was given a 12-month ban at the start of the year, but has been in court fighting to have that suspension reduced. Arsenal are keen, but Romano states that their interest depends on the ban.
“Yes, contacts are ongoing. They are awaiting for the decision surrounding the ban of Onana, to see how long it will be. Arsenal are still in talks with the agents of Onana. They are really keen, they think he is the perfect goalkeeper. But the suspension will be key to see if they go for Onana.”
Onana rated at £7million, a bargain for Arsenal – even if appeal fails
The outcome of Onana’s appeal is still awaiting the African goalkeeper. But Goal report that Onana could cost just £7million. Even if his appeal fails, signing Onana for such a tiny figure is surely worth it. The Gunners should sign him regardless.
The goalkeeping area at Arsenal is likely to undergo major surgery this summer, with Bernd Leno’s future in doubt. Mat Ryan could join permanently, while Alex Runarsson might go. But if Arsenal are to do one bit of business, it should be Onana.
