Josh Risdon’s comments after the World Cup should give Aston Villa hope of deal

Aston Villa are said to be considering a move for the Australian international right-back Josh Risdon. The Sydney Herald is reporting that the Championship side wants Risdon and his compatriot Brandon O’Neill.

Aston Villa are in desperate need of some defensive reinforcements if they are to continue their push for the playoffs. Risdon, who impressed for Australia at the World Cup, would provide another option at right-back and Aston Villa are right to be targeting the player.

It certainly would appear that he could be keen on the move.

Risdon has been a star in his domestic league for some time, first with Perth Glory and now with the Western Sydney Warriors. However, the 26-year-old must now be considering his options in Europe and he admitted as much in the summer.

Speaking after the World Cup he admitted to the Daily Football Show in Australia that a move abroad remained ‘an ambition’ of his.

“That’s always been an ambition of mine, so hopefully if I can continue to do well here at the Wanderers and something comes up, I’ll look at the opportunity.”

Aston Villa would be right to be the team who takes that gamble. The right-back looks ready to play at a higher level and the Championship side desperately need to improve their defensive unit if they are to make the top six.

Add in the fact Risdon, much like their very own Alan Hutton, has been dubbed his nation’s Cafu, and Aston Villa are clearly onto a winner.
