Before Josh Maja eventually did leave Sunderland in January, he was linked with a number of different clubs. One such team was Crystal Palace. It appeared that the Eagles might be keen on the youngster, who had spent some time on the books at Selhurst Park as a boy.
However, when asked about the links, Palace manager Roy Hodgson had a surprising reaction. As reported by Sky Sports, Hogdson said he had ‘never heard of’ Maja.
A team who are reportedly interested in you is one thing. However, the manager of the team that has just signed you is another.
But Bordeaux boss Ricardo Gomes has now admitted to 20 minutes in France that he also did not know anything about the former Sunderland striker.
“I admit it, I did not know him necessarily. He’s a real gamble.
“He’s a lively boy, agile and who often makes the right gesture in front of the goal. is in training, we’ll see what happens in a match.”
It appears that the Englishman has impressed at Bordeaux since his move which, according to the Daily Mail, set the French side back £3.5 million.
But it begs the question, why leave Sunderland? If there was somewhere where his talents and name were certainly known it was at the Stadium of Light. The fact that his new boss and those reportedly keen did not even know who he was is an alarming fact for the young boy.
If he had remained at Sunderland, he would have certainly felt more appreciated in the long-run. Hopefully, Maja can be a success in France, because it would be a massive waste of talent if he now struggles after leaving Sunderland. But many Sunderland fans will be saying ‘we told you so’ if things do not go to plan.
