Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Josef Martinez from Atlanta United. According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are ready to return to Atlanta for Martinez after signing Miguel Almiron last January.
Almiron has had a mixed start to life in England but Martinez could help squeeze the best out of the exciting midfielder. If the pair reunite at St James’ Park, it could help both of them reach the next level.
Almiron’s final ball lacking
Almiron has played 15 games since his January switch from the MLS. And he has stirred up excitement with his pace, skill and willingness to run at defenders and take them on.
Unfortunately, he is lacking the end product. In 15 games, the Paraguay attacking midfielder is yet to score a goal or register an assist. This is a poor tally that needs improving considering the hefty fee Newcastle spent on him.
Martinez and Almiron form lethal partnership
At Atlanta, Martinez and Almiron combined to devastating effect. Doing it in the Premier League is another question but there is no doubting the duo have chemistry. If Martinez comes to Newcastle, he will already be on Almiron’s wavelength.
The South American duo took the American league by storm in 2018. Without Almiron, Martinez is still thriving. But he might be tempted to join his old team-mate in Newcastle.
Martinez and Joelinton at Newcastle?
You cannot argue with Martinez’s prolific goalscoring record. The 26-year-old has scored 31 goals in just 34 games this season. There is no doubting that Martinez knows how to find the net.
That natural finishing ability can only benefit Newcastle if he gets the right service. Alongside Joelinton, Martinez can help Newcastle score the goals to ensure that relegation is not a possibility.
