Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly earmarked Edin Dzeko as a potential January transfer target.
The Portuguese manager, according to The Mirror, believes that the Bosnian striker is the perfect option to help take the load off Harry Kane in attack.
The Roma striker is now being watched by Tottenham scouts with a view to a winter move, according to reports.
It is news that has surprised some fans of Tottenham, especially given Dzeko’s age and potential price-tag.
But it should not come as such a surprise when you consider Mourinho’s previous comments on the player.
Back in 2014, whilst Chelsea manager, Mourinho was quoted by the Manchester Evening News as suggesting Dzeko was the Premier League player of the season for 2013-14.
“My player of the year would always be from the champions.
“Manchester City need a point. I would say a City player and I would choose Dzeko. He was the third striker at the beginning of the season and when the team needed him, in crucial moments, he made the difference. He has 16 goals. Sixteen for the third striker is something spectacular. He’s not just a goalscorer. He assists, he plays.”
Dzeko scored 16 goals in the league that season as Manchester City famously caught Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool in the title race. That was despite often playing third-man to Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo. Luis Suarez, however, was named the player of the season.
But it is clear that Dzeko has long been a player admired by the Tottenham boss. Now it seems he will try to get his hands on him in the winter.
