Spurs boss, Jose Mourinho, wants both Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen to sign new deals with the club.

Both players’ contracts are running down as things stand. Under former manager, Mauricio Pochettino, it was widely expected that the pair would move on.

However, with Belgian defender, Toby Alderweireld signing a new deal yesterday, there is renewed hope that both players may well have a change of heart.

And Jose Mourinho is one man who is hoping to see both Eriksen and Vertonghen commit their future to the club.

“Yes,” Mourinho replied when asked if he wanted Vertonghen to sign a new deal (Mirror).

“Can I say more? No. I think a player will sign a contract when the club wants. When the player wants. When the family wants, and when the agent wants.”

The Portuguese coach nodded to the commitment of Alderweireld. Mourinho insisted that the Belgian’s comments after signing his new deal were a testament to how good a place to play football Spurs is.

And when pressed further on Christian Eriksen, Mourinho had a similar response.

“The only thing I will tell you about Christian is that I would like him to sign a new contract”.

Spurs will no doubt be hoping that Mourinho’s presence and the decision of a big player like Alderweireld staying put, can sway Eriksen and Vertonghen.

There was no way anyone would have seen Alderweireld signing a new deal last year. In that sense, it shows how good Jose Mourinho is and that players want to play for him.

If he could somehow convince both Eriksen and Vertonghen to stay, then it would really be a masterstroke.

However, the question lies with wages. If Spurs want to keep to a certain structure, they’ll have to break it to keep hold of Eriksen in particular.

That, and the fact he hasn’t been at his best for some time, might well mean it’s time both parties cut ties with each other.
