Jose Mourinho suggests Gedson Fernandes could leave Tottenham in January

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has hinted Gedson Fernandes could end his loan spell early.

The midfielder has struggled in north London since arriving in January of this year, and has only made 13 appearances for the club so far.

He’s only made one appearance (against Chelsea in the EFL Cup) in 2020/21 so far, and routinely misses out on Mourinho’s final matchday squads.

It seems there are simply too many midfield options available to the manager, who has given an honest assessment of the 21-year-old’s situation.

He told Sport TV (translated by Goal): “For me it is never a problem, but a solution. Having him in the squad, even if he is not called up and not playing, is an extremely comfortable situation.

“I will never be the one to push him or say that I don’t want him here. But I understand the situation of the kid and Benfica.

“If the club wants to end the relationship here, we will be here to collaborate, because we want the good of the player. Benfica has the power to decide and will be accepted by us.”

The youngster has great potential, but he simply cannot get near the starting XI given the sheer amount of options available to Mourinho.

He just hasn’t been able to take the chances he has been given, which is perhaps down to the inability to build momentum.

It probably makes sense for all parties if Gedson returned to Benfica early – the club clearly aren’t being stung much with him not playing.
