Jose Mourinho has labelled Harry Winks’ performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup win very, very good as Spurs booked their place in the fifth round of the competition on Monday – in comments reported by Football London.

Tottenham saw off a tough Wycombe challenge to win 4-1 at Adams Park. The game had looked destined to continue into extra-time before the visitors scored three late goals.

It was Winks who put Spurs in front for the first time. The midfielder produced a deft finish from outside the box with four minutes remaining.

The goal came after another strong performance from the 24-year-old. And following the victory, Mourinho suggested that he thoroughly deserved his man of the match award.

“We had some good performances from the boys that started the game. Of course Winks man of the match which is very much deserved because I thought he was very, very good in everything he did, apart from the goal,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“The goal is just a very small important detail but happy because I think the attitude of the team was very professional and it’s the kind of game that even if we lose because we don’t take chances and they score in the last minutes, let’s say that, I wouldn’t be sad because very professional performance.”

It has been a difficult season for Winks. He has struggled for game-time in the Premier League, so has had to make the most of the opportunities coming his way in the cup competitions.

Of course, Spurs will not be getting too carried away with a win over Wycombe. But Winks’s display was incredibly encouraging.

Mourinho has shown that under him, players can fight their way back from the brink to become integral to his plans. Tanguy Ndombele scored their final two goals on Monday as he continues to develop into a world-class midfielder.

And Winks – who earns £50,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – seems to have gone through some of the same battles as Ndombele.

There has been speculation about his future this season. He has struggled for starts. And perhaps the brighter signs he has shown in January hints that he could be the next player to prove a real point.
