Jose Mourinho has suggested, in comments reported by Football London, that he thought that Giovani Lo Celso was fantastic during Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 defeat to RB Leipzig on Wednesday night.
Spurs will need to overturn a deficit when they travel to Germany next month. Timo Werner scored from the penalty spot after a poor challenge from Ben Davies just before the hour-mark.
Leipzig were arguably the better side for much of the game. However, Tottenham put them under plenty of pressure towards the latter stages.
And the main driving force behind their fightback was arguably Lo Celso. The Argentinian was a class act, driving the side forward.
He also came agonisingly close to scoring a brilliant free-kick with less than 20 minutes to go. And Mourinho seemed to hint that he could not have asked for more from the 23-year-old.
“I think he played fantastic,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“He played in the middle, got a yellow card which is a huge limitation for a player against a fast side. Then he comes to the right side and he was phenomenal with the ball and without it.”
TBR View – Lo Celso’s statistics highlight his brilliance
Whoscored.com backs up Mourinho’s comments. No player from either side completed more key passes or more dribbles than Lo Celso.
He was also the only Tottenham player to put two attempts on target.
It was a tough night for Spurs. But Lo Celso provided another reason to believe that they have uncovered a real gem.
