Tottenham boss praised Dele Alli to Football London after Spurs defeated Fulham 1-0 to throw themselves back into contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The 24-year-old was handed a rare starting berth and was instrumental in Tosin Adarabioyo’s own goal which gave Tottenham a big three points.
Alli has endured a turbulent campaign but has been handed a few more opportunities in the Premier League and Europa League of late.
All he can do is continue grasping his opportunities with both hands and Mourinho was impressed with his performance last night.
The boss told Football London: “He deserves it. It was not a gift. It was a consequence of his work since he came back to the team.
“He was giving us important things. He did very well in the Europa League. He did very well against Burnley and West Ham and he deserved it.
“At this moment we need the squad. So many matches are coming so far. Of course, we need it. We cannot change the structure of the team. We can change two or three players which today we did with Dele, Ben and Matt.
“I’m happy with what they gave the team. For Dele, it was important for him to start a Premier League game.”
TBR View: Alli must continue showcasing talents to Mourinho
The demise of the £100,000-a-week maestro does seem somewhat bizarre and perhaps Mourinho his now prepared to swallow his pride.
Alli at his very best is capable of being a game-changer in the Tottenham ranks and all he can do is continue grasping his chances.
The youngster was struggling big style for game time but in the New Year, something seems to have changed.
He is now getting opportunities more frequently and that can only bode well.
The challenge now for Alli is to convince Mourinho to give him a regular run of games in the team.
