Jose Mourinho has posted two pictures on Instagram after Tottenham Hotspur earned a 3-1 win over Macedonian side KF Shkendija in the third round of Europa League qualifying – after the goals were measured too short before the match.
Spurs progressed into the third round after beating Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Plovdiv last week, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele. Kane was on the score sheet again, though they did make it slightly hard for themselves.
Erik Lamela gave Spurs the lead but the north Londoners were lacklustre from his fourth-minute goal, and Shkendija equalised after 55. But the introduction of Harry Kane and Gio Lo Celso turned the tide, with Son Heung-min and then Kane netting.
Before the match, Joe Hart and the other Tottenham goalkeepers noticed that the Shkendija goals were too small – indeed, five centimetres too short. Mourinho posted pictures of himself and Hugo Lloris, joking he thought he had grown.
After two very long trips into eastern Europe, Spurs now benefit from playing their Europa League play-off at home against Israeli side Maccabi Heifa. The match, which will determine who reaches the group stage, will be played on October 1.
Spurs, meanwhile, came through the game unscathed in terms of injuries – though Dele Alli was hooked before the hour mark. Tanguy Ndombele impressed again, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
