Jose Mourinho now shares what his relationship with Brendan Rodgers is truly like

When the Celtic fans hear the name of Jose Mourinho they instantly flinch at the feelings they had after the 2003 UEFA Cup Final in Seville.

Mourinho’s Porto won the cup in dubious fashion as the Portuguese manager was really starting to make his name in world football. The following year he took the same team forward to win the Champions League.

The Roma manager was hired by Chelsea off of the back of his European success and during his time there he went head to head with Rodgers for the English Premier League title.

A Steven Gerrard slip was enough to hand Mourinho the championship. The 60-year-old was asked about that match and why he wanted to beat Rodgers’ Liverpool so much at the time.

Mourinho said [The Obi One podcast], “Nothing to do with Brendan. Brendan was a young guy that the structure bought him to work in youth football and like I always do still today, I tried to help these guys and bring them to sessions with me.

“When it is a national team period, where the majority of the players go away, I let him work with me on the pitch. So what I did with Brendan I did with lots of other guys.

“We always have a great relationship, we played against each other even last season, and we love each other – in many fun moments we used to call Brendan ‘The Special Two’.

“We have a very good relationship.”

The Celtic fans will be hoping that some of the magic the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ has will have rubbed off on Rodgers as they look to their manager to get them out of this slump in form.

Celtic have allowed an eight-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to turn into a potential one-point deficit.

Losses to Kilmarnock and Hearts coupled with draws with St Johnstone, Hibs and Motherwell have allowed Rangers to possibly overtake them at the top of the table should they win their two games in hand.

Next up for Celtic is an away trip to Livingston where the Hoops traditionally struggle to get a result. The fans, and Rodgers, will be hoping that’s not the case this week.
