Jose Mourinho comments on Tottenham star, likens to Wolves ace Adama Traore

Jose Mourinho has told his post-Newcastle United press conference – as per Football London – that he did not Steven Bergwijn to keep the Tottenham ace fresh, and compared him to Wolves powerhouse Adama Traore.

The 22-year-old has made an exciting start to life at Tottenham since his £27million move from PSV Eindhoven – netting three goals including an excellent strike on his debut against Manchester City.

Despite that, the nine-time Netherlands international has started just three of Tottenham’s seven matches since the restart – with Mourinho preferring both Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura out wide.

He was a substitute against Newcastle and after coming on in the 57th minute, he laid on the perfect cross for Harry Kane to restore Spurs’ lead – eventually winning 3-1. Mourinho compared his situation to Traore.

“If I start with Bergwijn today you would ask me what Lucas has to do to start. They have to be team players, How many times has Nuno [Espirito Santo] left [Adama] Traore on the bench to win matches in the last 30 minutes?”

TBR’s view – Bergwijn more effective than Lucas?

In 45 league and cup appearances this season, Lucas has scored just seven goals and has only created three more. Though the Brazilian is renowned for his hard work, loyalty and commitment – is he good enough in attack?

Despite completing just 90 minutes four times out of 14 Spurs appearances, Bergwijn has had a hand in four goals. Given the game time, surely Bergwijn is already showing more of a threat than Lucas?
