Jose Mourinho comments on new Tottenham signing Joe Rodon
Jose Mourinho discussed new signing Joe Rodon in his pre-LASK press conference – as per Football London – after Tottenham Hotspur completed a move for the Wales international in the final embers of the domestic window.
Reports of Spurs eyeing a move for the 22-year-old centre-back began during the previous deadline day, and it took Spurs until the domestic deadline to agree a fee for Gareth Bale and Ben Davies’ national teammate.
Initial reports suggested that Tottenham wanted to pay £7million to sign Rodon, while Swansea wanted in the region of £20million. But TalkSPORT claim that the two sides came to a compromise of £15million for the four-time Wales cap.
Rodon was signed too late to be included in Tottenham’s Europa League squad, but has been included in the Premier League list. It means he will not be able to face LASK, but Mourinho responded when asked about the centre-back.
“We got him because we can see a future for him. Let’s work and let’s see the evolution and step by step he will be there,” Mourinho told Wednesday’s press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa League group stage clash.
TBR’s view – Rodon needs time and Tottenham patience
Still somewhat of a rookie, Rodon has only clocked up 54 appearances for Swansea at senior level – and 12 times on loan at English minnows Cheltenham Town. He is still very unproven and it is quite the risk for Spurs to spend £15million on.
He is not going to get regular game time given he is not in the Europa League squad, and he is some way down the pecking order for a Premier League spot. But game time in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup could see Rodon show his worth.
Time, patience and confidence in his ability may give Rodon a chance to shine going forward.
