Jose Mourinho and Rio Ferdinand praise super-sub Fernando Llorente
There is no doubt that Lucas Moura is the hero for Tottenham Hotspur today. The Brazilian scored a hat-trick as Spurs overcame the odds to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final in Madrid.
However, special mention has to go to Fernando Llorente. The Spaniard had an impactful performance from the bench as Spurs completed a miraculous turnaround.
It even earned praise from one of football’s greatest coaches. Jose Mourinho spoke of Llorente’s impact on beIN SPORTS last night.
“Blind couldn’t cope with Llorente. The defensive line could not cope with the long ball.
“Llorente’s chest was the link for everything. Strategy beat philosophy.”
He was not alone. Rio Ferdinand had similar words to say in the box for BT Sports.
“Llorente, what a substitution. He stood on Daley Blind after he came on. They pumped balls into him. Daley Blind can’t physically compete with Llorente.”
The Tottenham striker is often criticised. The back-up to Harry Kane is not a world-class striker but in his style, there are not many players better in world football.
His physical presence saw him bully the much smaller Daley Blind. When Matthijs De Ligt took over, the Spaniard used his experience and nous to outwit the special teenager.
It was a fine display from Llorente, whose contract at Spurs expires in the summer. He will hope to potentially go out with a bang in the Champions League final next month.
