Jose Mourinho and Harry Kane respond when asked if Tottenham can win the PL title

Jose Mourinho and Harry Kane have both responded when asked if Tottenham Hotspur can win the Premier League title this season after earning a 1-0 win away from home at Burnley on Monday night – thanks to Son Heung-min’s winner.

Spurs climbed to fifth place in the Premier League table and just two points off first with the win, and considering Mourinho’s men have conceded last-minute equalisers to both West Ham United and Newcastle United – they should really be top.

In what was a tricky trip to Lancashire, Spurs remained solid and needed Kane to head the ball off the line with Hugo Lloris beaten. But Kane proved equally as effective at the other end, flicking an Erik Lamela corner on to Son.

It saw Kane and Son combine once again this season, as the South Korea captain headed home. Harry Redknapp claimed Spurs can challenge earlier this summer, and momentum is building. But Kane and Mourinho remain focused.

“It’s still early on. We need to take each game as it comes. I know it’s a cliche. We still have a lot to learn and build on but I think nights like this will give us a lot of confidence,” Kane said, as per BBC Live’s coverage of the match.

Mourinho was quoted by Football London: “I assume that every match we play, doesn’t matter against who, we go to win. I don’t have anything more to this to promise. We need to be very balanced, if we risk too much we could lose it.”

TBR’s view – The title race is wide open, but we are just six games in

Liverpool and Manchester City have stuttered in their opening matches. The Reds were battered 7-2 by Villa and drew against Everton, while Manchester City have suffered a big loss to Leicester City and drawn with Leeds and West Ham.

It is hardly as if Tottenham have gone without a hiccup, though. Spurs were beaten by Everton and should really have seen off West Ham and Newcastle. However, their European form – and a 6-1 win over Manchester United – is boosting Mourinho’s men.

Why not? If they can sure up the defence slightly, and continue to keep Kane and Son fit, there is no reason why Spurs cannot challenge for the title given Liverpool and City are struggling. But they must tighten up.
